Creating A Better Outlook – The Wonder Method To The Rescue!

July 15th, 2022 by Audrey Weidman

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely six day camping getaway in the wilderness. Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan’s lower peninsula to be exact. It was the first time we camped in a camper rather than a tent. It was an upgrade and a big success!

Even though we had a bit of rain, we felt blessed by the weather. The natural surroundings were spectacular and we got to enjoy them so affordably.

There were a couple of days where I kept asking myself – “How can it get any better than this?” The weather was as perfect as our environment.  But all things do come to an end.  We headed home to the Chicago area and made it almost all the way through Michigan – within 5 minutes of the Indiana border on I94.  Then this happened!

Life Isn’t Perfect

Life isn’t perfect – even if the social media feed seems like everyone else’s life is.

My husband initially thought it was rough pavement – there was lots of repair work happening. But when we pulled over to have a look, our tire was almost completely shredded! Very likely from debris in the sidewall of the tire.

Due to construction, 3 lanes were down to 2 and we were approaching rush hour. Trucks whizzed by at such a speed that our van shook with each pass. I felt a little nervous that we might be hit as my husband changed the tire. Luckily it was on the side away from traffic.

My husband, a very capable engineer and fix-it guy, put on the spare within 15 min or so. But there was a problem. There was no air in the spare. We needed road-side assistance. Neither one of us were comfortable remaining on the highway shoulder. We limped along at 5 miles per hour and got off at the closest exit.

I Had A Choice

During all this, I had a choice about how to feel. I could get upset/angry/scared about what happened. Or I could be grateful that I was safe. I chose the latter.

The tow truck arrived fairly quickly. He was going to tow the truck to the nearest gas station, but that meant I needed to stay with the camper and the dog. I was in the empty parking lot of a winery/distillery tasting place. But it wasn’t open so I had it all to myself. Road traffic was very light. I was also very low on cell phone battery.

Practicing Wonder

What should I do? I walked the dog around the parking lot and then decided to practice WONDER.

I’ve been training to be an instructor for The Wonder Method. This involves going into a high state of mental coherence with breath work and feeling the state of wonder. I then “processed” the issue.

You may ask – what exactly is wonder? Wonder is the feeling of curiosity and awe. It is a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable. I had plenty of wonder to draw upon from my recent days at the beach. In fact I was memorizing that feeling throughout our trip – so that I could draw upon it later.

  • We all know what sadness feels like.
  • We know what anger feels like.
  • We know what love feels like.
  • We know what happiness feels like.

But to feel wonder is where energy shifts and healing happens. You’re tapping into a high level energetic field. You’re at one with God (or the quantum field if you prefer) at least that is my interpretation.

In that empty parking lot, I “processed” my situation with the car. I brought it into my awareness and then allowed it to shift as I let go. I was grateful for what I did have. I felt love for myself as I experienced the drama of the situation. And I finished by creating this positive statement.

“I wonder what it might be about, getting home safely and uneventfully in daylight right now.”

As I was processing the tire drama, a woman who lived ½ mile away, saw me sitting alone by the camper. She drove over to see if I was OK. Did I need water? Dog food? Help in any way? She explained her son had 3 flats with 3 different cars on the same stretch of highway in the past month! I told her all was good – but thanked her for her kindness and concern. She said she’d check again in ½ hour if I hadn’t been picked up.

I now had an additional resource!

I went back to processing and feeling wonder. Another driver pulled up asking if I needed help. I thanked him and said I was waiting for my husband to return.

Was it a coincidence? Or did my higher vibration attract these people to me?

Counting My Blessings

As I thought about the unfortunate tire flat incident, I started to count my blessings.

  • This was the first flat tire I ever experienced! And it’s been decades since I got my drivers license!
  • My husband Dan was with me and was able to change the tire quickly and efficiently.
  • We had roadside assistance as part of our insurance.
  • The tow truck guy was friendly and came promptly.
  • We got off the highway and parked in a safe area.
  • It was daylight.
  • The weather was good – sunny and comfortable.
  • Two different people stopped by to see if they could help even though I was on a low traffic road off the highway.
  • We made it home safely on side roads (we couldn’t go over 50 MPG on the spare). This was no small feat given that we had to go through Gary IN, by steel mills and power plants.
  • The car is fine, the camper is fine, the dog is fine, and we are fine.

I never really worried. I knew we were going to be OK and taken care of. The WONDER of it all…
